Abstract

Hair colour dyes are extensively utilised in contemporary society for aesthetic enhancement; however, their possible detrimental effects on human health and the environment have sparked increasing apprehension. Numerous traditional hair dyes comprise a range of chemical substances, including ammonia, parabens, resorcinol, and coal-tar derivatives, which may lead to skin irritation, allergic responses, and, in certain instances, more severe health complications such as respiratory issues, endocrine disruption, and even cancer. Prolonged exposure to these chemicals, particularly with the regular application of permanent or darker dyes, could elevate the risk of chronic health conditions. Furthermore, the environmental ramifications of hair dye chemicals, especially in wastewater and runoff, have raised concerns regarding their long-term ecological effects. Although regulatory measures exist in many nations, the safety of hair dyes continues to be a contentious issue, with an increasing movement towards safer alternatives, such as natural and organic dye products. This paper explores the toxicological hazards linked to commonly utilised hair dye components and their effects on individual health and the environment and discusses the potential advantages of adopting safer, more sustainable alternatives within the cosmetic industry.
