The global push for sustainability, circular economy and reduced reliance on fossilderived materials has accelerated research and industry adoption of biobased and biodegradable materials. These materials— derived from renewable feedstocks such as plants, microorganisms, agricultural residues and biomass—offer reduced environmental impact, potential for compostability or recycling and novel functionality. This review surveys recent advances in biobased polymers, composites and materials across multiple industrial applications including packaging, automotive components, construction and textiles. Key topics include feedstock sourcing, polymer synthesis and modification, composite design with natural fibers or fillers, endoflife (EoL) and biodegradation routes, performance improvement via reinforcement and nanocomposite strategies, and industrial scaleup and commercial deployment. We highlight mechanistic insights into structure–property relationships, engineering challenges (mechanical strength, barrier properties, processing, durability) and environmental assessment metrics (lifecycle impact, carbon footprint). Emerging directions encompass multifunctional biocomposites, hybrid bio–inorganic systems, biobased coatings, smart biodegradables and integration into circular value chains. The increasing environmental concerns, depletion of fossil resources, and growing demand for sustainable materials have driven the development and industrial adoption of bio-based and biodegradable materials. Derived from renewable feedstocks such as plants, agricultural residues, and microbial sources, these materials offer reduced carbon footprint, potential biodegradability, and compatibility with circular economy principles. Emerging trends such as smart biodegradable materials, bio-based coatings, waste-to-value feedstocks, and life-cycle sustainability assessments are highlighted. Bio-based and biodegradable materials represent a promising pathway to replace traditional petrochemical based materials, but ongoing innovation is needed to achieve performance parity, economic feasibility, and full environmental sustainability.
