Abstract

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have emerged as vital actors in India’s development landscape, supplementing state efforts in addressing social, economic, and humanitarian challenges. Rooted in the country’s long-standing traditions of voluntary service and philanthropy, NGOs have evolved from welfare-oriented service providers to influential agents of advocacy, empowerment, and participatory development. Despite significant economic growth since independence, persistent issues such as poverty, inequality, malnutrition, inadequate healthcare, and exclusion of marginalized communities highlight the continued relevance of civil society interventions. This paper examines the historical evolution of NGOs in India, their constitutional and legal foundations, key areas of intervention, and their role in bridging the gap between the state and society. It also analyzes the regulatory framework governing NGO activities, particularly foreign funding regulations, and discusses the challenges faced by NGOs in the contemporary political and administrative environment. The study underscores the importance of strengthening transparency, accountability, and collaboration to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of NGOs in promoting inclusive and equitable development in India.
