Abstract

This paper examines the social-cultural risk factors that predispose men to female-perpetrated violence in Rubaare town council, Ntungamo District, Uganda. Using purposive and snowballing sampling, the study carefully chose twelve male victims of domestic violence and nine key informants. The study adopted a singular methodology that enabled the collection of qualitative data. The study used interviews and focused group discussions. The participants were scientifically selected, and twelve in-depth interview participants were selected from the town council; four of the twelve male victims were first identified through police and community workers; then the four were then identified to the researcher as other male victims (snowballing). Data was thematically analyzed using the content analysis technique, and that gave a clear understanding of variables under investigation. Findings indicated that male victims of domestic violence abound in Rubaare; stigmatization causes male victims’ non-disclosure; and female aggressors sometimes use traditional mechanisms to control their male victims. The study concludes that lack of social support worsens the conditions of male victims of domestic violence in the town council. To prevent domestic violence against men, recognize male victims of domestic violence, and provide counseling centers specifically for male victims. The study recommends reviewing the existing family bylaws to encourage male victims to report violence and equal treatment before the law on issues regarding domestic violence because men were normally seen as perpetrators rather than victims in Ntugamo, Uganda.
