Abstract

Polymer and textile engineering have emerged as key enablers of innovation in biomedical science, providing versatile materials and systems that address critical healthcare needs. Advances in polymeric biomaterials, functional textiles, and hybrid polymer–textile systems have enabled the development of medical devices, wearable health monitoring systems, and implantable technologies with enhanced performance. These materials are designed with tunable mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and biofunctionality, allowing their application in drug delivery, tissue engineering, wound care, and regenerative medicine. Recent innovations include smart and stimuli-responsive polymers, nanofiber-based scaffolds, antimicrobial textile coatings, and biodegradable implantable systems, which collectively enhance therapeutic outcomes while minimizing adverse effects. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art biomedical applications of polymers and textiles, emphasizing translational approaches, clinical relevance, and interdisciplinary integration. Key challenges, including material durability, scalability, regulatory compliance, and patient safety, are also discussed, along with emerging directions for next-generation biomaterials, multifunctional textiles, and personalized healthcare solutions. By highlighting recent advances (2023–2025), this review underscores the transformative potential of polymer and textile engineering in shaping innovative, effective, and sustainable biomedical technologies.
