Achieving Sustainable Destination Competitiveness: Challenges and Strategies
Abstract
The tourism industry has witnessed a growing emphasis on sustainable development, particularly with regard to enhancing the competitive advantage of destinations. As global tourism continues to expand, destinations must navigate the delicate balance between fostering economic growth and protecting their natural and cultural heritage. Achieving sustainable destination competitiveness involves integrating environmental protection, social equity, and economic development into tourism planning and management. While tourism offers substantial economic benefits, such as job creation, infrastructure development, and revenue generation, it also presents numerous challenges, including environmental degradation, social inequality, over-dependence on tourism, and the risk of resource depletion.
This review article explores the concept of sustainable destination competitiveness by examining the intersection of tourism development, environmental sustainability, and community well-being. The paper discusses key challenges that destinations face in achieving sustainability, such as over-tourism, economic dependence on tourism, and the tension between growth and preservation. It delves into strategies that destinations can adopt to create a sustainable competitive advantage, including eco-friendly infrastructure, community-based tourism, responsible marketing, and collaboration between stakeholders.
The article also examines case studies of destinations that have successfully implemented sustainable practices, showcasing frameworks and best practices that other destinations can adopt. Through these examples, the review highlights how destinations can diversify their tourism offerings, promote sustainable behaviors among tourists, and ensure that tourism benefits are equitably distributed among local communities. By balancing economic growth with environmental protection and social equity, destinations can create competitive advantages that are both environmentally and socially responsible, ensuring their long-term viability and appeal.
Ultimately, this review aims to provide insights into the principles, strategies, and practical applications of sustainable destination competitiveness, offering recommendations for policymakers, tourism planners, and industry stakeholders to achieve a harmonious balance between tourism development and sustainability.
