Community-based tourism (CBT) has emerged as a powerful tool for local development, particularly in rural and marginalized areas, where it provides an alternative form of tourism that fosters cultural appreciation and sustainable growth. The model emphasizes the active participation of local communities in tourism planning, management, and decision-making processes. This participatory approach ensures that the benefits of tourism—economic, social, and cultural—are more equitably distributed among community members, while also prioritizing the preservation of local cultures, traditions, and ecosystems. However, despite its potential, CBT is not without challenges, especially in terms of socio-cultural impacts on host communities. While it offers opportunities for cultural exchange, empowerment, and social cohesion, CBT can also contribute to issues such as cultural commodification, social inequality, and cultural erosion.
This review article delves into the socio-cultural dimensions of CBT by examining both its positive and negative impacts. It explores how CBT influences community identity, social dynamics, and cultural preservation. The article also discusses the risks of cultural appropriation and the commercialization of traditions, which may undermine the authenticity of local customs and practices. Through case studies and existing literature, the article highlights best practices for minimizing the negative effects of CBT, such as community empowerment, stakeholder collaboration, and sustainable tourism planning. Moreover, it addresses the need for ongoing monitoring and adaptation of CBT strategies to ensure long-term sustainability and cultural preservation.
By analyzing the complexities of integrating tourism with community development, this article aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how CBT can be managed to enhance socio-cultural benefits while mitigating adverse impacts. The findings emphasize that successful CBT must strike a delicate balance between tourism growth and cultural preservation, ensuring that local communities are not only beneficiaries of tourism but also active agents in shaping their own future.
