Drug abuse among youth is a serious social and public health concern that can negatively affect individuals, families, educational institutions, and society. Adolescence and young adulthood are important stages of physical, psychological, and social development. During this period, young people may become vulnerable to substance use because of peer pressure, curiosity, stress, family problems, social influence, lack of awareness, and other environmental factors. Early initiation of substance use is particularly concerning because it is associated with a greater risk of harmful use and substance use disorders later in life. This research paper examines the major causes and effects of drug abuse among youth through a review of available literature and information published by recognized health and international organizations. The study focuses on peer groups, family environment, academic and emotional stress, curiosity, social surroundings, and inadequate awareness. It also discusses physical, psychological, academic, social, and financial consequences associated with harmful substance use. The paper further examines preventive measures involving families, educational institutions, healthcare professionals, communities, and policymakers. Awareness programmes, supportive family relationships, counselling, life-skills education, early intervention, and evidence-based prevention strategies can contribute to reducing harmful substance use among youth. A coordinated and health-centred approach is necessary to promote the well-being and healthy development of young people.
