Abstract

This research paper delves into the multifaceted issue of sexual crimes in India, examining their diverse manifestations and the legal landscape surrounding them. Various types of sexual crimes, including but not limited to rape, sexual assault, and harassment, have been a persistent challenge in the country, imposing severe social and economic repercussions. This study elucidates the existing legal framework governing such offenses, emphasizing the need for a subtle understanding of these laws to effectively combat the pervasive issue. The impact of sexual crimes on India's economy is explored in depth, with a specific focus on their implications for GDP growth. The study reveals that these crimes result in a significant economic burden, affecting productivity, workforce participation, and overall societal well-being.  To mitigate this economic loss and foster a safer environment, the paper recommends a refined approach. Strengthening law enforcement capabilities, enhancing legal provisions, and ensuring swift and impartial judicial processes are paramount. Additionally, the study proposes comprehensive educational initiatives aimed at fostering gender sensitivity, awareness, and empowerment. Creating a supportive infrastructure for survivors, including counselling services and legal assistance, is essential to facilitate their reintegration into society. Ultimately, this research aims to contribute to the development of evidence-based policies that address the root causes of sexual crimes and their economic ramifications. By adopting a holistic strategy that combines legal reforms, societal education, and support systems, India can aspire to create a safer environment conducive to sustainable economic growth and societal well-being.
