Abstract

Rural society is a close-knit association, as politically administered by self-sufficient units. The unique system of norms and values that controls the attitude and social conduct of the ruralizes, often turns into a hostile machinery of moral policing sanctioned by a bygone patriarchal bias as a reply to modern thought processes. Khap Panchayats are such bodies beyond law and legality in its nature however yet to be abolished. This paper attempts to analyze the operation and existence of Khap Panchayats in the rural India, adopting a purely doctrinal approach.
