Abstract

Political sociology is a subfield of sociology that delves into the intricate and dynamic relationships between society and political institutions, processes, and behaviors. It examines how social structures, identities, and power dynamics influence political systems, and conversely, how political decisions impact societal norms and organization. This article reviews key themes and developments within political sociology, highlighting its relevance and contributions to understanding contemporary political phenomena. By tracing its historical roots to classical sociological theories of Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Émile Durkheim, the article provides a foundation for understanding how the field has evolved to incorporate diverse perspectives and methodologies. Key themes such as power and authority, political participation and behavior, state and society relationships, social movements, and the impact of globalization are explored. Additionally, contemporary issues like populism, identity politics, the influence of technology, economic inequality, and environmental politics are discussed, showcasing the field’s engagement with current global and domestic challenges. Through a comprehensive analysis of these themes, the article underscores the importance of political sociology in unraveling the complex interplay between politics and society, providing critical insights into the mechanisms driving political change and stability.
