Abstract

The bioaccumulation and biomagnification of polluting compounds in aquatic ecosystems pose significant threats to environmental and human health. This review article investigates the accumulation and amplification of harmful substances, such as heavy metals, pesticides, and industrial chemicals, within aquatic food chains. Through a comprehensive review of literature and empirical data, this research elucidates the mechanisms by which pollutants enter, accumulate, and magnify within aquatic organisms, impacting their physiological functions and ecological interactions. Key factors influencing bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes, including species-specific traits, trophic levels, environmental conditions, and pollutant properties, are analyzed. The consequences of bioaccumulation and biomagnification on ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity, and human exposure are discussed, emphasizing the need for effective pollution management strategies and regulatory measures. Understanding these complex interactions is crucial for mitigating the adverse effects of pollution on aquatic ecosystems and safeguarding both environmental integrity and public health.
