A Review of Developments in Satellite and High-Altitude Platform Systems

Satellite and High-Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) have transformed communication, observation, and connectivity worldwide. This review examines recent advancements and challenges in both satellite and HAPS technologies. Satellite systems have benefited from miniaturization, enabling the development of CubeSats and High-Throughput Satellites (HTS), while reusable rockets have reduced launch costs. Meanwhile, HAPS, including solar-powered drones and airships, offer innovative solutions for communication, surveillance, and environmental monitoring. Challenges such as space debris management, regulatory frameworks, and technological reliability must be addressed to fully leverage the potential of these systems. Looking ahead, satellite and HAPS technologies are poised to continue revolutionizing various sectors, provided ongoing advancements are accompanied by strategic solutions to existing challenges.
