Abstract

Glass is one of the most versatile, durable, and sustainable engineering materials owing to its unique combination of optical transparency, chemical stability, mechanical strength, and its capability for infinite recyclability without significant loss of quality. It plays a critical role across multiple industrial sectors including construction, packaging, automotive, electronics, and renewable energy systems. In recent years, increasing environmental concerns and global sustainability targets have driven significant innovations in glass manufacturing and recycling technologies.
Modern advancements in glass production have focused on improving energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing product performance. Innovations in float glass manufacturing include optimized furnace designs, oxygen-fuel combustion systems, and partial or full electrification of melting processes. These developments have substantially reduced energy consumption and carbon footprint associated with traditional high-temperature glass production. Additionally, the integration of renewable energy sources and hydrogen-based combustion technologies is emerging as a promising pathway toward decarbonizing the glass industry.
On the recycling front, cullet-based production systems have gained widespread adoption due to their ability to lower raw material demand and reduce melting energy requirements. The use of post-consumer and industrial glass waste (cullet) not only decreases landfill burden but also enhances furnace efficiency and product quality. Furthermore, advanced smart sorting technologies, including optical sensors, artificial intelligence (AI)-based classification, and automated separation systems, have significantly improved the purity and recovery rate of recyclable glass streams.
